Finalists Announced for Innovation in Education Awards Honoring Schools, Educators and Students in Orange County

Annual Awards Recognize New Approaches to Preparing Students for 21st Century Lives and Careers

Irvine, Calif. –Nine finalists were announced today for the 2015 Innovation in Education Awards presented by Project Tomorrow and the OC Tech Alliance to schools, educators and high school students who are charting new paths in education
Project Tomorrow, the nation’s leading nonprofit group focused on science, math and technology education, and the OC Tech Alliance have been recognizing outstanding education programs, educators and students for their innovative uses of science, math and technology with this award since 2006.
Finalists for this year’s awards are:
  • Innovative School-Wide Program of the Year in Science, Math & Technology – distinguishing a public, private, or parochial school that demonstrates innovation with an outstanding, results-based school-wide program

The 2015 Innovation in Education Award recipients will be announced at the 22nd Annual High-Tech Innovation Awards Dinner on Thursday, October 8th, 2015 at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The annual education-focused segment is a partnership between Project Tomorrow and corporate sponsors, Emulex and Haworth.

Nominations for the 2015 Project Tomorrow Innovation in Education Awards could be self-submitted or submitted by a district and/or school staff person. Organizations such as a PTA unit, parent advisory committee, or any youth based organization were also eligible to nominate. An independent review panel of local education and business leaders will select the award recipients. The annual Innovation in Education Awards are open to all public and private schools in Orange County.

Study Concludes Access to Technology—In & Outside the Classroom—Increases Student Engagement
Project Tomorrow & Kajeet Announce Results of Two-Year Study with Chicago Public Schools
MCLEAN, Virginia—Jan. 21, 2015—Kajeet®(www.kajeet.com/education), the only wireless service provider dedicated to kids and education, and Project Tomorrow®, a national education nonprofit, announce the results of a two-year-long study on the impact of mobile devices on teaching and learning.  The Making Learning Mobile 2.0 study continues taking an in-depth look at the impact of 1-to-1 tablet implementation, including Internet access outside the classroom, with Chicago Public Schools students.
 
Results from the Making Learning Mobile study included:  
  • The school-issued tablet increased at-home Internet access for this cohort of students by 53 percent.  This is especially significant given the persistence of the digital divide in home Internet access within our communities.
  • The teachers felt more comfortable and assigned more reading and writing homework because the students had home Internet access. This resulted in increased reading and writing fluency, which is especially important for English Language Learners.
  • 60 percent of the students agreed their reading increased because of their personal access to the tablet and the Internet; 60 percent noted they did more writing this school year than in previous years and that the tablet helped them improve their writing skills. 
 
The project was sponsored by Kajeet with funding from Qualcomm Incorporated, through its Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™ initiative. Kajeet and Project Tomorrow will host a webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 4 pm EST to discuss the results, including how the tablets transformed teaching and learning for both students and teachers from one year to the next.
 
As part of the Making Learning Mobile 2.0 study, 127 Chicago 5th grade students and their four teachers were provided with Android tablets using Kajeet Education Broadband to connect kids in school and at home. The objectives were to evaluate how the students used the devices, in and outside the classroom, to support their schoolwork and extend learning beyond the classroom, focusing on increased literacy. Ninety three percent of the students in the Chicago focus school were considered low income and 45 percent were qualified as English Language Learners. Just over one-third of the students noted they did not have Internet access at home. 
 
“We wanted to evaluate how access to these devices for communication with teachers and classmates increases comfort with technology, extends the learning day, and allows students to develop digital citizenship skills within a safe and secure learning environment,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. “During the second year of the study, we were interested in learning how the teachers would integrate the devices into instruction and how that integration would help the students develop stronger research skills.”
 
“As technology spreads through schools, students are proving eager to embrace it. But that same technology increasingly demands mobile Internet connectivity — preferably broadband —to be fully effective as a tool,” said Daniel Neal, CEO and founder of Kajeet. “There are still many schools without adequate wireless Internet connectivity to allow mobile devices to function to their full capability. Studies like this one show teachers, students, parents and administrators the value of not only the technology, but the necessity for connectivity as well.”

Professional Development Model Being Implemented to Support State’s Schools

Raleigh, N.C. — On Jan. 8 and 9, over 50 instructional technologists and coaches, mentor teachers, and media coordinators came together at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation for the first event of the yearlong North Carolina Digital Leaders Coaches Network (DLCN): Building Change Agents in Education program.
The Friday Institute has collaborated with Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit organization, and North Carolina Technology in Education Society (NCTIES) to develop the DLCN to assist schools and districts in the process of digital learning transitions, and to cultivate local capacity by providing support to those in coaching roles, as coaches are essential to leading and supporting student-centered digital learning and teaching.
“Project Tomorrow is partnering with the Friday Institute to extend what we learned from our National Science Foundation funded Teachers’ Readiness to Adopt and Adapt Digital Content grant to more education leaders in North Carolina,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. “This research demonstrates the importance and value of instructional coaches to help teachers leverage technology effectively to enhance student learning experiences.”  
Based on research on effective professional learning, the DLCN will provide ongoing, job-embedded and peer-supported professional development that is grounded in relevant and rigorous curriculum and instruction. This program seeks to ensure that participants have access to personalized and sustainable opportunities centered around pedagogy and digital learning with a significant emphasis on strategies that allow them to apply that knowledge to build capacity among educators, administrators, and students in the school.
Throughout the year, the cohort of educators will reconvene and interact with education experts through monthly face-to-face reunions and in an online environment. This structure will provide participants opportunities for professional networking and collaboration within a blended and sustainable community for the sharing of ideas and strategies. They will also acquire strategies and knowledge related to best practices in leadership and supporting stakeholders in their schools and districts.
“In giving these coaches an opportunity to learn and network with other educators who are in similar roles, we are helping to build a support structure that will ultimately have a positive impact on student learning experiences,” said Nancy Mangum, a research scholar at the Friday Institute and a project lead for DLCN.
This blended learning experience, built on the North Carolina Media Coordinator, Instructional Technology Facilitator & Coaching Evaluation Instruments, will help participants grow as educators, coaches and leaders while assisting them in building strong professional learning networks. The core components of Leadership and Culture, Content and Curriculum, Sustainability and Evaluation, and Being a Connected Educator are woven throughout all components of the DLCN experience.

Top Technology Issues Facing Schools
National Speak Up 2014 Surveys Open Until December 19th

Irvine, Calif. – For the 12th year, K-12 students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members across the country have the opportunity to share their views on the role of technology within learning as part of the annual Speak Up National Research Project. 
The national online Speak Up 2014 surveysare open to all students, parents, educators and community members until December 19th.  More than 13,000 individuals have responded since the surveys opened last week. 
More than 10,000 schools and 3,000 districts are expected to register and promote the online surveys to their stakeholders again this year because of the value of the Speak Up data in informing their plans and policies for the school year.  Schools and districts who register to participate receive survey data particular to their school(s) at no cost. Last year, more than 400,000 people shared their opinions.
Always cognizant of the key issues facing schools and districts with technology usage, this  year’s Speak Up annual surveys poll K-12 students, educators and parents about the use of mobile devices, online and  blended learning classes, digital games and digital content within learning.  The 2014 surveys include new questions about data privacy, students’ interest in learning coding, college and career readiness, teachers’ familiarity with digital badges, and the features desired by both students and parents in a school mobile app.   
As more students have their own smartphones, tablets and laptops, last year’s surveys showed a major shift in attitudes towards Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies. The surveys continue to explore that issue as well as schools’ bandwidth capacity to support the use of high quality digital content such as videos and animations within classroom instruction.  And in recognition of the ongoing interest in improving teachers’ skills with technology, the Speak Up surveys collect important data for local schools about teachers’ wish lists for professional development and the training methodologies that are more effective.
“Speak Up provides an easy way for students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members to tell school leaders and policymakers how they feel about some of the most important policies and programs that impact day-to-day school life,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. 
“Innovative education leaders use the annual results of Speak Up each spring to help direct their policies, programs and investments,” said Evans. “As a national nonprofit dedicated to improving learning experiences for students, we are pleased to leverage our expertise in collecting authentic stakeholder feedback to provide this important free service to local schools and national leaders.”
After more than a decade and 3.4 million participants, Speak Up continues to be the only annual, national survey to ask students, educators and parents how they use – and how they would like to use – technology for learning.  Again this year, the online surveys ask students, parents and educators to envision their ultimate 21stcentury school and to identify the technology tools that would be essential to support increased student achievement and learning.  Past Speak Up national reports are available at www.tomorrow.org/speakup/speakup_reports.html.
The Speak Up National Research Project represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered input on education and technology from those ‘on the ground’ in the schools.  The annual survey about education and technology is facilitated through public, private, parochial and charter schools all around the country. The parent survey is also available in Spanish.
Project Tomorrow will share the national data findings from the survey in the spring with federal, state and local policymakers.  Additionally, every school or district that participates in Speak Up receives a free online report with all of their locally collected data – and the national data findings to use for benchmark comparison. All participating education entities will gain access to their own stakeholder data in February 2015. 
Individual participation and responses provided in the Speak Up surveys are completely confidential and completing the online surveys takes only 20 minutes.  Speak Up is open to every public and private school and district in the United States, American schools on military bases and other interested schools worldwide.
Since 2003, more than 3.4 million K-12 students, educators and parents from more than 30,000 schools in all 50 states have participated in Speak Up. The online survey is facilitated by Project Tomorrow and supported by many of our nation’s most innovative companies, foundations and nonprofit organizations including Blackboard, Inc., BrainPOP, DreamBox Learning, Fuel Education, Qualcomm Wireless Reach, Rosetta Stone, and Schoolwires.
Project Tomorrow partners with more than 75 different education associations, organizations and think-tanks for outreach to the schools and development of the survey questions including the American Association of School Administrators, Consortium for School Networking, Digital Learning Day, Digital Promise, edWeb.net,  iNACOL, International Society for Technology in Education, National School Boards Association, National Secondary School Principals Association, Southern Regional Education Board and State Education Technology Directors’ Association.

Gregory Nicholson Hired as
Project Tomorrow Director of Advancement
Irvine, Calif. Gregory Nicholson has been hired as Project Tomorrow’s new Director of Advancement. This is a new position at the national education nonprofit organization. In this role, Nicholson will be responsible for securing the resources to help Project Tomorrow achieve its mission through fund as well as partnership development. 
“Greg is a wonderful addition to our team at an exciting time of growth for our organization,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. “So much of our work is based on relationships and collaborations with schools, businesses, foundations and organizations across the country. We look forward to the new partnerships he will help cultivate as we continue our work as a leading STEM education and information source.”
Previously, Nicholson was Assistant Director at the Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING in Los Angeles (CA) where he was responsible for the recruitment of districts, schools, and teachers into the ART of TEACHING program, as well as communications and partnerships.  In that role, he co-founded the Mathematics Leadership Corps, an education reform collaborative in Southern California to promote improved teaching and learning in mathematics throughout the Culver City school district.   
“During my career, I have worked on both the foundation and nonprofit sides and have developed many successful collaborations in the education community,” said Nicholson. “I am thrilled to be joining an organization with such a successful track record, and I look forward to bringing my experience to support the mission of Project Tomorrow. Project Tomorrow understands that communities are more powerful when they work together to advance teaching and learning – and that such collaboration is essential to achieving our society’s goals for STEM education.”
Nicholson holds a doctorate in English Literature from Michigan State University, where he was a University Distinguished Fellow and the author of the university’s decennial re-accreditation report. Prior to graduate school he worked in non-profit management in social services and education. He was graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College.
